The speedway opened in 1997 as California Speedway, a two-mile D-shaped oval built on the site of the old Kaiser Steel mill, and its infield was laid out with road courses for sports cars, motorcycles and club track days. This layout is the long, narrow infield circuit: a straight run with a series of tight left-right jinks and a hairpin at the far end, drawn as one thick, even line.
