What makes this a grey rather than a generic parrot is the mask. African greys have a patch of bare white skin surrounding the eye, and the cut reproduces it as an open shape rather than filling the head in solid — so even in a single colour the bird is identifiable. The species comes from the rainforest belt across equatorial Africa and is best known for vocal mimicry; birds in long-term study have shown a working vocabulary of well over a hundred words.
