The American Water Spaniel was bred as an all-purpose hunting dog in the upper Midwest, compact enough to work from a small boat yet sturdy enough for a full day retrieving through marsh and cold water — a working breed rather than a show-ring specialty, which is part of why it stayed relatively rare outside its home region.

Wisconsin's own breed

It's one of only a handful of breeds actually developed in the United States, and Wisconsin named it the state dog in 1985 — a real point of local pride reflected in this silhouette decal.
