This is the plain flag treatment in the family: red field, black double-headed eagle, cut to a pennant shape with a shield-pointed bottom edge and a hanging rod along the top rather than a flat rectangle. The eagle traces to the 15th-century banner of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the national hero who resisted Ottoman rule, and the flag itself was adopted on independence, declared in Vlorë on 28 November 1912.

Albania borders Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece, with its capital Tirana and a long Adriatic and Ionian coastline that has become an increasingly popular Mediterranean travel destination.
