Adelaide got the Australian Grand Prix in 1985 and held it until 1995, and for most of those eleven years it was the last race of the season — which meant championships were settled there. The circuit ran on closed public roads through the East Terrace area and Victoria Park, mixing true street-circuit right angles with a long, fast straight that let cars stretch their legs in a way most street tracks never allow.

It produced the kind of races people still argue about: the 1986 finale where a tyre failure decided the title on the back straight, and Ayrton Senna's final Formula One victory in 1993. After the Grand Prix moved to Melbourne the roads stayed in use, and a shortened version of the layout still hosts touring car racing as the Adelaide 500.

The outline reproduced here is the full-length configuration. You can pick out the long top straight, the stepped sequence of ninety-degree corners along the bottom left where the lap threads between city blocks, and the narrow spur that drops away to the right through the parkland section.
