The split cut exists for curved surfaces. One tall badge applied across the shoulder of a fuel tank or the curve of a helmet shell will fight the compound curve and crease near the edges; two shallower pieces applied in sequence will not, because each one only has to bend in one direction.

Against the keyline version

The framed tricolore badge in this range is the same artwork with a white keyline round it and the two halves joined. That is the easier one to apply — a single piece, one alignment. This one takes a moment longer and rewards it with a flatter finish on anything curved, and the gap between the pieces reads as part of the design rather than as a mistake.

Because there is no keyline, the gap fills with whatever is underneath. On a white panel the two pieces read as one badge with a white slot; on a black one the black band merges into the surface and only the tricolore dome carries.
