Rum, hot pepper sauce, sea-island cotton and sugar: Barbados has been stamping its name on exports since the seventeenth century, and crossed flags are the oldest trade-badge convention there is. This one puts two blue-and-gold flags on black poles in an X, three small stars above the crossing, and MADE IN BARBADOS curving beneath in widely spaced capitals with a dot at either end of the arc.
It belongs on a product box, a craft seller's packaging, a market stall sign, a rum-shop door, a laptop or a suitcase. Compared with the other four Barbados quality labels in this range it is the only one with crossed flags and the only one shaped like a heraldic badge; the strip, the shield, the square and the round stamp sit alongside it.
The flag itself dates from independence on 30 November 1966, its trident broken from the shaft to mark the end of colonial rule. Printed in full colour on glossy vinyl and cut round the flags and arc with a narrow white border. Two identical stickers per pack.
