Every piece of this emblem means something. The bearded fig tree on the gold shield is the tree that gave the island its name, Los Barbados, the bearded ones, from the Portuguese sailors who saw its hanging roots. The two red flowers are the Pride of Barbados, the national flower. The dolphin fish on the left stands for the fishing industry, the pelican on the right for Pelican Island, once off Bridgetown. Above the helmet a hand holds two sugar canes crossed in a saltire, the cross of St Andrew, because independence came on St Andrew's Day, 30 November 1966, the same year the arms were granted. PRIDE AND INDUSTRY runs along the scroll beneath.
It is printed in full colour, the fish in turquoise and red, the pelican brown and cream, the mantling red and gold, and cut round the whole emblem with a narrow white border. It suits a car's rear window, a laptop lid, a suitcase, a cricket bag or the glass of a community hall door.
