Afghanistan is landlocked, and its outline is one of the more recognisable in Asia because of the thin finger of land reaching north-east: the Wakhan Corridor, drawn in the 1890s as a buffer strip between the Russian and British empires and still the country border with China today. Filling that shape with the flag makes both readable at a glance.
The flag itself runs as three vertical bands — black, red, green — with the national emblem in gold centred on the red. The emblem is a mosque with its mihrab and minbar, framed by wheat sheaves, with the Solar Hijri year 1298 below it and the country name on the scroll at the foot.
