The Celts took the bear seriously. In Gaul, Artio was worshipped as a bear goddess, and a bronze figure of her with a bear was found near Bern, the Swiss city whose name is linked with bears to this day. This design takes the animal's most recognisable mark, the paw, and fills it with the knotwork that Celtic art is known for.

The toes each hold a small looped knot inside a leaf-shaped pad, and a long, curved claw rises from each. Below them the heel pad is a large triple knot, three lobes woven over and under one another around a central point. It is one continuous interlace cut as a single sheet of vinyl, with every gap between the strands left open.

It is a natural choice for a tattoo-minded design on a tailgate, a helmet, a guitar body or the lid of a laptop, and it is detailed enough to deserve a size of at least 12cm so the knot gaps stay clear. In white on a dark surface the interlace reads especially well.
