Looking for the flag of Benin in the plainest possible shape? This is it: a round disc with no frame, no ribbon and no lettering, just the three colours of the flag, with a soft sheen across the yellow corner.
The flag itself is easy to read. A green band runs top to bottom at the hoist side, covering roughly two-fifths of the width. To its right, a yellow block sits above a red one. The colours are the Pan-African palette, and they are usually read as hope and renewal for green, the wealth of the northern savannas for yellow, and the courage of ancestors for red.
The same flag was flown by Dahomey from 1959. After the red-star flag of the 1975 to 1990 period, Benin brought it back in 1990, which is why it feels both new and long established.
A circle is a practical shape for a flag sticker. It sits neatly on a phone case, a helmet, a laptop lid, a car side window, a guitar case or a water bottle, and nothing is lost at small sizes because there is no fine detail to shrink.
