Would you expect a flag in a diamond? Turn a square on its corner, round the tips and add a gold border, and the Benin flag becomes an eye-catching lozenge. Because the flag is cut on the diagonal, the green band slants at the left edge and the yellow and red blocks meet along a line that runs up to the right.
The glass panel has a bright curved highlight along its upper left side and a deeper pink glow across the lower right, so the colours seem to roll across the surface. A solid gold frame circles the diamond with a dark inner edge, and two gold ribbons hang from the lower point.
Benin's flag has no crest or emblem, which is why geometric frames suit it so well: the three blocks of green, yellow and red stay legible whatever the outline. The colours were chosen for their Pan-African meaning, and on this flag they are commonly taken to stand for hope, the north's wealth and the bravery of ancestors.
A lozenge outline stands out among round and rectangular stickers, so it works on a helmet, a laptop lid, a car side window, a phone case or a guitar case.
