The Benin flag has no emblem, only three colour blocks, and that makes it ideal for a shield. The green band runs down the left side of this crest, the yellow block fills the upper right, and the red block fills the lower right, so each colour gets a broad, clean area.
The shield is tall, wide at the shoulders and drawn to a point, with a glossy highlight that sweeps from the upper left across the green. A narrow gold edge frames it, and two gold ribbon tails dangle from the point with a dark seam down each, so the finished shape looks like a sports crest or a medal pinned to a jacket.
The yellow in Benin's flag is usually read as the wealth of the northern savannas, and the red as the courage of the country's ancestors. The country's ancient kingdom of Dahomey, with its royal palaces at Abomey, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The pointed outline works well in upright spots: a car side window, a school locker, the back of a phone, a guitar case, a helmet or a fridge door.
